Day 5 – Friday

Discovering Wellington on foot

After breakfast, we set out on foot to explore Wellington on our own, as Tristan had his final day at school. We started by heading toward the harbor and were lucky enough to spot a sea lion right away. Unfortunately, the weather was quite mixed, with frequent rain showers. After getting fairly soaked, we looked for a cozy café to warm up and dry off a bit before heading back through the city center to our hotel.

Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, is known for its vibrant arts scene, political heart, and stunning natural surroundings. Nestled between hills and a rugged coastline, the city offers a unique blend of urban culture and wild nature. Despite the rain, we could feel the creative energy of the city—street art, quirky cafés, and a lively waterfront made the walk worthwhile.

Evening with Tristan’s host family

In the afternoon, we made our way to Tristan’s host family’s home. We had planned to have dinner together and then attend a musical performance at the school. The evening was warm and sociable, and the musical was wonderfully done—truly a great experience.

After the musical, Tristan showed us a series of unique metal sculptures spread across the school grounds. Each year, a new sculpture is created and installed by the Industrial Arts collaboration project, contributing to an evolving outdoor gallery that reflects the school’s creative spirit. It was fascinating to see how art is integrated into everyday life at the school.
